About FSAE

The FSAE Class

Started in 1979 by the Society of Automotive Engineers, Formula SAE challenges student teams worldwide to design, manufacture, and race a car from scratch.

Over 400 teams from universities worldwide participate in events hosted around the globe, where teams must defend their design choices during static events under the scrutiny of industry judges, and prove their car's performance — and their drivers' abilities — in dynamic events. Each team's car must excel across every category to win top honors at competition.

Day One

Static Events

Static events include Design Presentations, Cost Analysis, Sales Presentations, and a full Technical Inspection. In the Sales Presentation, teams build a hypothetical commercial market entry and pitch their strategy to industry judges. Before Design Presentations, the Cost Report is combed for accuracy and the car must pass Technical Inspection — every inch scrutinized for rules adherence, with corrections made on-site before the car can move to dynamic events. Design Presentations give students the chance to demonstrate their understanding of the engineering process and highlight key design decisions.

Day Two

Dynamic Events

Every car negotiates five dynamic events: Acceleration, Skidpad, Autocross, Endurance, and Efficiency (scored within Endurance). Each event runs four heats, except Endurance, which runs two. Points are awarded relative to the best car in each event. Acceleration is a timed straight-line run. Skidpad is a figure-eight course testing minimum time through constant-radius turns in both directions. Autocross showcases cornering through a tight, feature-dense course. Endurance — usually long and fast — tests the car's performance at its peak for the longest stretch of the competition.
